When we pray out of desperation we are praying from a place of fear. We are not sure our prayer will be heard. Whe we pray we should pray from a place of gratitude. Knowing that what we need is already being given. All we need to do is knock and the door is open. If we doubt that we our going to be answered it puts blocks in our way. All realities are there waiting for us. Pray with gratitiude knowing you have already been given. The universe (God) does know what we need or desire because God is within us. All potentiality is there waiting for us. Be grateful!!

...that the gods do not hear us when we are afraid, but only when we are grateful and content? I hate to think of the theological implications of that.

If I believed the gods were seperate entities looking down on us I would also not like to think of those gods being that cold either...but I don't think of God as a seperate entity...it is that creative force, omni present(even in us) that we call on and speak to...it is that life force that is in us all, everything....When we pray we are calling on that life force, creative energy...if we focus on negative thoughts or feelings then that is what we create...it's not a matter of a cruel god only listening to grateful people and ignoring the rest...that would be awful!!! Our thoughts and words are very powerful things.....

oh my a God who could not hear us when we were in our height of fear...that is scary...somehow i dont think that is what you are saying...we learn in time all is well...fear anxiety and such can cause undue stress ...i would think that God is all that is...and there fore any state one is in is of no mind to alter anything outside our human emotional state of being....I think what we should do ...is be who that we are...and do what we need to do ...so long as it does not cause direct harm to another ...something as simple as a reply to a post can cause harm...so then that could lead to a long list of is this ok...or that ok etc...we can just be the best we can be and continue to grow...I take your statement Rev Kathy as a helpful way to be...it is easier when we reach this place....

I think it is OK to pray for material things, because sometime these things are what we need. Imaginary situation, a single mother is working and attending school so to make more money to support her family. She needs her car to get to work to make current money and to school to get the education that will let her make more money in the future. Praying for lower gas prices to make all this possible makes sense. It is not purely selfish, it is also admirable...

This could be applied to anyone who needs to get somewhere to work or study or see that family member. There is nothing wrong with asking for what we want or need, but we also must be willing to accept that answer, whatever it may be.

I would think the majority of theists do believe that their deity is Other.

I understand your point of view, even if I do not share it.
