Has nothing whatsoever to do with sex.
That is the literal exoteric meaning. Only the simple think that it has to do with sexuality. It is the western way of explaining duality which in the eastern systems they explained with yin and yang. The fact that there have been hermaphrodites born occasionally is a birth defect or weird mutation like thalidomide babies only it is caused by factors that are not known (unlike the thalidomide, which is well documented) . |

I don't believe it is a character trait or persona one assumes consciously, deliberately. It may be a subconscious self-preservation technique to avoid intimacy or relationships outside our control. Perhaps, and this may be a stretch, it's an attempt to appear undisireable after having some abuse issues early in life?

I can well believe that as the Masculine and Feminine aspects become more closely aligned, then the psyche of the resulting person will be a less 'male' character in attitude. I don't think that the strengthening entanglement of the Masculine/Feminine is any reflection of - nor actually affects - the sexual preferences of the resulting person. Peace, Love, & Light

I believe just as there is a whole spectrum of sexual identity from absolutely heterosexual all the way to absolutley homosexual whith a multitude of variances inbetween , this is also true with gender identity. There are straight people who dress there role completely. There are straight people who dress the complete opposite of what society has set as a standard. There are gays who dress acording to the styles of the opposite sex..there are gays who dress according to the styles of societies standards according to their physical makeup. There are also many inbetweens. I personally believe that some people who are very progressed in their spiritual journey are more likely to dress in an androgenous fashion....identity and fashion is of less importance to them....When I think of androgeny I am reminded of Pat from the Saturday Night Live show....no one new for a while if it was actually a male or female!

In my long years of medical practice I have never seen a true physiological or anatomical hermaphrodite.
I don't know but this is my opinion. I think of Androgyny not as an anatomical classification but a form of transgenderism. I have known some people who are transgender who because of their activity (sports or heavy labour) and are genetically and anatomically female may acquire masculine traits (deep voice, wider based strutting male like walk, weaing trousers and work shoes.) Like Kathy said about homosexuality being at one end of a long spectrum of intermediates to the opposite end of heterosexuality; transgenerism may be similary. Some mild examples may simply be men enjoying classical feminine chores and some females becoming police constables. Others may assume the opposite sex identity so that nobody knows the truth until they undergo surgery. Amergin
