Introduction to the Elder Futhark

In this workshop, we'll be dealing with the Elder Futhark, a set of 24 symbols. (There are other versions of the runes, ranging from 16 to 33 in number.)

The name "Futhark" is an acronym that refers to the first six runes:

F = Fehu
U = Uruz
Th = Thurisaz
A = Ansuz
R = Raidho
K = Kenaz

The actual runes are more alphabetical than symbolic in their actual physical shape, but each rune has an associated symbolic value. These values can be used in meditation and in divination, but should be considered as starting points rather than answers.

Ideally, a set of runes is handmade - Either painted on like-size stones, or carved from wood. (My own set was handcarved from discs of maple, a process which took me several months and required a sharp, narrow spoon gouge and constant resharpening of the tools.)

If you choose to make your own runes, work at a solid, well-lit table or desk in a quiet corner of your living space. Work on only one piece at a time, preferably sequentially. (Doing two or more runes in the same day is possible, but take a break between one and another.) For best results, cut or paint only while meditating on the rune's meaning... If your thoughts wander, stop and clear your head before continuing.

The completed set can be ceremonially "charged" before use. This is also a good way to proceed if you purchased a set of runes. Charging runes can include such things as:

- A blót (offering) to Oðinn, the Norse god most closely associated with the runes;

- Speaking the rune's name aloud;

- Breathing "life" into the piece.

A set of runes is usually stored in a small drawstring bag. One common method of casting runes is to draw three from the bag and place them upon a white cloth. My personal interpretation is that the three runes represent past, present and future; however, this future is never immutable.

The runes, or rather the circumstances that one "sees" through them, represent one's own state of mind and prevailing conditions at the moment of the runecasting. Quite simply, if something looks like a warning... It is. Careful consideration of one's current thoughts and feelings provides clues as to the wisest course of action.
