Absolute Zero

Regardless of dictionary definitions, do you think it is possible for something to be colder than absolute zero? (-273 Celcius)

Not 100% sure why, but I say yes. Perhaps a form of matter that vibrates in such a way that it makes its surroundings colder rather than warmer.

I think that I heard that it is possible but I'm not sure of the details. I think it had something to do with that temperature being predicated on a vacuum. In a non-vacuum I think it's possible to go lower... but I'm not sure on this at all.

I thought by defintion this was impossible. At 0 degress Kelvin (according to theory) atoms cease to move/vibrate losing all kinetic (and therefore heat) energy. There's no more heat to lose.

Why do you ask Rev. Rex?

A couple of reasons, really. First, I wondered what others thought about it. Second, because every time a scientist comes up with an "absolute" definition (no puns intended), sooner or later, exceptions are found. That isn't a bad thing, it just means that science is evolving as our knowledge grows, and things that were once thought to be totally unrelated are found to have a bearing on old theories.

...or maybe because I was considering running for political office??

(NOT, there isn't anyway in the world. I have too much respect for myself. But if I was, that would surely be an absolute zero...)

Sir Rex, ( I knight you Sir Rex )

May I humbly add that if indeed a colder version of absolute zero is discovered....then THAT will then become absolute zero will it not ?

How do they get the temperature anyway ?..have they actually measured absolute zero ?...isn't it an impossibility ?

It's even too cold for my snowmen !!

Good point. I believe that any colder temperature would then become absolute zero. You are also right; there is no way to actually measure it. Temperature is measured by the flow of heat from one place to another. So Absolute zero is theoretical and can't be measured directly (since atomic motion stops, and it is the motion that 'causes' heat, so to speak). They can only measure how much warmer a substance is than absolute zero. Absolute zero is theoretically and by international agreement, -273.15 degrees celcius. The coldest substance that I know of that has been produced in a lab is liquid helium, with a temperature of a bit below -270. That's pretty darned close!

Temperatures of a few other gasses at the point they become liquid (that is, the boiling point)...these are in celcius degrees:

Oxygen -183
Nitrogen -196
Hydrogen -253
