New light on the Dead Sea scrolls

Some interesting news for those interested in ancient texts:
Quote:
Ancient writings from the Dead Sea scrolls are to be read for the first time by British scientists using powerful x-rays.

The team will examine rare and unread fragments of the scrolls, which are believed to shed light on how the texts came to be written in caves along the north-west coast of the sea nearly 2,000 years ago.

The technique will give scientists from Cardiff University a first opportunity to read ancient texts considered too fragile to open.

I agree - that IS exciting. Here's a paragraph from the article:

Quote:
The team's first goal is to read hidden texts from the scrolls and the Torah which is said to record the word of God as revealed to Moses.

"There are some parts of the Dead Sea scrolls that haven't been unrolled, and there are parts of the Torah that haven't been seen as well," Prof Wess said. "There are discoveries to be made in terms of trying to understand the whole picture of the history of the people who wrote the Dead Sea scrolls and why they moved into that area of the Dead Sea. Sometimes we don't know their value because we can't see inside them, and until we start looking, we don't know what's there."

I wonder when they're going to do this. Thanks for the post, agedhippy!

I had the privilege of seeing the cave where the scrolls were found at the Dead Sea (we could not go inside however) and saw some of the texts at the Dome of the Book in Jerusalem. Extremely interesting.

And it was 114 degrees and don't tell me how it's not hot because it's only dry heat!

Vern

LOL Metis, it's only dry heat!

Wow that must have been interesting. Can you share with us some information on the texts that you saw? Were they unrolled? How old? How many? What language?

To me this is all brand new : )

It's in ancient Hebrew, which I'm very lousy at btw. The text of Isaiah was unrolled in the center of the room behind protective glass, and if there's any trouble, the cylinder that it's around goes down below the bottom floor and into granite for protection. The various texts date back over 2000 years and include most of the Tanakh ("O.T.") and some additional writings that the Essenes authored. As far as how many were on display, I cannot tell you since most of them are copies. The building itself is interesting since it has natural "air conditioning"-- water is sprayed over the dome and the evaporation process cools the entire building.

If you ever go, I highly recommend going to the Dome of the Book, and make sure you buy an extra ticket for me. I've been there twice and would love to back again.

Shalom,
Vern

Oops! I believe some of the scrolls were also written in Aramaic if my memory is correct. After the Sabbath I'll look it up to see just how bad my memory is.

Metis, thanks for the info. As soon as I win the lottery I will let you know ; )
Have the documents that were unrolled been translated yet?

ad_iudicium is on a distinguished road
I tried to see if there was an updates, but nothing I could find at present. It's going to be fascinating to see what secrets will be unlocked by this technology.

Thanks Metis, I found a lot of info on the internet and read the translations of the scrolls that were unrolled. It's so interesting to be able to go so far back in time (memory).

Your welcome.

I believe that one thing the DSS helps to confirm is the diversity that we find in Judaism even that far back. There are some orthodox Jews who believe every Jew must be orthodox and that is the "true faith" (at the expense of Conservative and Reform), but history paints a different picture, namely that there are often multiple Jewish groups in existence at any one time. And the implications for those who follow Jesus is that his movement was one of many branches that existed at that time period.

Shalom,
Vern
